In which SWMBO stuns her offspring.

We planned to stay in Petrovac, Montenegro for four nights and had a sobe (room) rented.  Somehow I screwed up and booked a room that could only accommodate a maximum of 4 people.  I guess that’s not bad odds considering it is the first such mistake in six months of steady travel.  The landlady had a larger room but it was only available for 2 nights so we took that and then decamped to another sobe across town.  Because we had to move all our stuff, we went by car.

Not sure what this is all about but we've seen more than a few cars like this.

We got in the car and I told the kids, “I don’t want anyone to wear a seatbelt.  We’re going to do this Montenegro style.”  The kids were astounded.  They had a blast during the short excursion but Paris pointed out that to be really authentic, Lastborn should have been sitting on Fahbio’s lap and holding the steering wheel.  Too true.

We were going to take the kids to the ancient water slide at Beach #2 for Venice’s “birthday party” but it wasn’t hot so instead we headed to the Friserski Salon for much needed haircuts.  The stylist was aghast at how uneven everyone’s hair was.  Fahbio was right: Firstborn and I aren’t that good at cutting hair!

Then I told the girls that they could get their nails painted at the salon if they wanted.  What?!?!

I am not a believer in kids wearing make-up and nail polish.  I find it garish and don’t think the chemicals are good for young bodies.  The girls think I am a big drag for never letting them paint their nails.  So to find out that not only were they going to get nail polish but nail polish applied at a salon by a professional!  They were too stunned to speak.  When they found out that Lastborn was included, their jaws just dropped.  Lastborn squeaked, “Even me?!”

Once in a while it is healthy to do the exact opposite of what you normally do.  Shake things up a bit.  It is also good to stun your kids like that every now and again.  It shows them that their desires are valid, that you are not inflexible, that life is short and meant to be embraced, and that you are unpredictable – like a ninja.  Keep them guessing, I say!
